A classic gin smash is gin, lemon, sugar and a fistful of herbs. Topping it with Ginger Stepchild adds fizz and a slow ginger burn from organic ginger and a pinch of cayenne. Basil keeps it green and peppery.
Basil Ginger Gin Smash
Serves 1 · 5 minutes · Contains alcohol
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 oz gin
- 4 oz Springs Culture Ginger Stepchild
- 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
- 1/2 oz simple syrup
- 5 or 6 fresh basil leaves, plus one to garnish
- Ice
Steps
- Muddle the basil with the simple syrup and lemon juice in a shaker.
- Add the gin and a scoop of ice, then shake hard for 10 seconds.
- Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice.
- Top with Ginger Stepchild and stir once.
- Garnish with a basil leaf.
Tips
- Use fresh basil. Dried basil will not muddle, and it tastes like a pizza.
- Add the kombucha last and stir gently. Shaking it knocks out the fizz.
- Swap the gin for vodka if you want the ginger and basil to do all the talking.
- Skip the gin and add an extra splash of lemon for a zero-proof version.
Why Ginger Stepchild
Most ginger beers lean sweet. Ginger Stepchild is brewed from real tea and fermented, so it brings acidity and depth along with the heat, and it holds its own against the botanicals in a good gin.
